The staff of Preference Dental realizes the importance local communities play in the success of their business. Throughout the year the staff gives back to the communities through local school presentations, business exposition participation, community fund raising activities, support of the arts and athletic teams, dental mission trips, donations to numerous organizations and participation in activities such as Habitat for Humanity and the Relay for Life.
Our Team also takes many continuing education courses throughout the year. This allows our team to increase our knowledge and update treatment techniques.

Dr. Douglas Killian
I was born and raised in Lansing Michigan, and attended Michigan State University from 1992-1995 majoring in Fisheries & Wildlife. I then attended University of Michigan School of Dentistry from 1995 until graduating in 1999 with a DDS degree. (And if there is any question, I absolutely favor MSU, GO GREEN!) Upon graduation, I Joined Preference Dental in the Fall of 1999. Continuing Education has expanded my skills and services to patients. I completed over 144 hours at the Dawson Center for Advanced Esthetic Dentistry over 119 hours at the Scottsdale Center for Advanced Dentistry focusing on cerec Cad/Cam, and approximately 70 hours at the Midwest Implant Institute in Columbus OH for Implant Dentistry, and certified by the ALD for Laser Dentistry, among numerous other hours of CE along the way. This has changed the way everyday dentistry is done. Comprehensive Care philosophy is essential to long lasting, successful dentistry.
Technology in dentistry is an important focus of Dr Killian to implement. I believe that it brings the best dentistry has to offer right here in rural Mecosta MI improving predictability, comfort, and excitement for our patients. It is rewarding on a personal level to provide smiles for patients which have such an impact on their life and overall health.
I have been involved with the West Michigan District Dental Society as the Mecosta County representative on the board, and previously went through the board chairs, serving as President in 2008. I have served on various committees with WMMDS, and continues to serve on the Delegation to the Michigan Dental Association annual session. I also continue to serve on the Michigan Dental Association Special Committee on Annual Session since 2004, and was committee chair for the 2008 annual session in Grand Rapids. I am member of the Francis B. Veddar Society of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics, the Michigan Dental Association and the American Dental Association. I have an awesome wife Jennifer, and three children, Isaac, Quinn and Gweneth. Preferably I spend my spare time in the outdoors with my family bowhunting, kayaking, backpacking, or I suppose, mowing the lawn.
Tammy Lindsey, Business Assistant
I graduated from Muskegon Community College in 2015 with my Associates in Office Management. I knew I wanted to work in an office setting and with Office Management there is always something new and exciting happening. No one day is the same.
We moved to Big Rapids about a year ago and I was fortunate to join the Preference Dental Team in the summer of 2019. The dental field is new for me, and I am looking forward to developing in this position.
I my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family.
Baily Darnton, Dental Assistant
I am originally from the Lowell area and moved to Big Rapids to attend Ferris. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2015 and loved the area, so I stayed. After college I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I considered a PhD in History but wasn't ready to go to school for four more years. I wanted to enjoy my time with my son. I happened upon an ad for Preference Dental and applied.
Within one year I've become x-ray, phlebotomy, and CPR certified. I really enjoy the surgery side of dentistry and I am learning all I can about it.
If you would have asked me several years ago what career I would be in dentistry would not have been one of them, but I cannot imagine doing anything else. I love helping people and being a dental assistant, there is nothing better than a patient telling you that they don't like the dentist but leaving our office saying, "Hey! That wasn't bad at all! Thank you!"
This is the most rewarding and fulfilling job I have ever had.
Tracie Haynes, RDH
I joined the Preference Dental team in 1995. I am a 1994 graduate of Ferris State University Dental Hygiene Program. Since joining Preference Dental I have been presented with many opportunities to further my skills and expand on my knowledge of dental hygiene. In 2005 I was able to attend a course at the University of Michigan and become licensed to give local anesthesia, most recently in 2009 I became certified in laser therapy for treatment of periodontal pockets as well as canker sores and cold sores. I am also currently the laser safety officer. I am grateful for the many opportunities I have been given at Preference Dental to continue to grow in my profession. I look forward to sharing all my skills with my patients and helping them maintain a healthy mouth.
I am also blessed to be a mother to two wonderful boys Matthew and Andrew and I have a very supportive husband, Mike. In my free time you can often find me out and about in the community, I have been know to work fish fries at St Michael's and I am the current president of band boosters at Chippewa Hills High School. I also attend many of the sporting events at Chippewa Hills since Andrew plays basketball, baseball and plays in the band. Matthew is a graduate of Chippewa Hills and is currently planning his future. I enjoy spending time with my family and spend most of my free time hanging out with them. I also love to bake a variety of cakes, cookies and pies and am always willing to try a new recipe which I love to share with family, friends and co-workers.
Suzanne Hosking, Business Assistant
I’m an RN with a degree in Nursing from Michigan State University-Go Green! In my previous life, I worked in a variety of nursing settings from home care to intermediate ICU and taught nursing clinicals for a few years before taking a hiatus to raise my family. I have 4 grown kids and my youngest just finished her first year at MSU. I worked behind the scenes at Preference Dental for a few years doing the payroll and other work. In 2008, I agreed to work as the business assistant in the office “temporarily” and have been there since.
From my perspective, most people go into a health-related field because they want to help people and make a difference in their lives. I work with a group of very caring individuals who do make a difference every day.
Linda Johnson, Scheduling Coordinator
Being the newest member of a great team here at Preference Dental I have my work cut out for me! From our doctors, assistants, hygienists and front office staff all are dedicated to providing our patients with the best of care.
I am a wife and mother of 4 grown children. My husband and I have been married for 38 years. We have two boys and two girls that we thought made our lives fulfilled but as most grandparents know having grandchildren exceeds that joy. We moved to Canadian Lakes to be closer to two of our grandsons. What a wonderful area!
Lindsey Lindsay, Dental Assistant
Twenty-five years ago I lived in Big Rapids. I graduated from Ferris State University in 1991 with my Applied Dental Science Degree. I worked in a private practice and was a substitute teacher at FSU. I have 3 adult children who were all born in Big Rapids. We moved to the East side of the state 25 yrs ago and just relocated back to Big Rapids last year.
I had retired from dentistry two years ago. Then I had a great opportunity in November of 2015 to work for two amazing doctors. I love dentistry and with two great employers I couldn't resist, so here I am.
When not working my true passion is fishing, hunting and anything else in the outdoors. I have two awesome cats, Mittens and Oliver, they are great companions!
So if I haven't already met you, I look forward to meeting you in the future!
Bonnie Reed, CDA
It was April 1983. I saw an advertisement in the newspaper. “Do you want to be a dental assistant?” I grabbed the opportunity and went for it. It was a training program that was eight hours a day, five days a week for sixteen weeks. Nothing but dental! It was like boot camp for dental assistants.
In 1990 my youngest son was in school full time and I joined the workforce, eager to use my new skills. Dr. Beattie and Dr. Hosking hired me as a sterilization assistant. I always say it was April Fools Day, just for fun. In 1991, I became certified in dental radiology through Ferris State University. Shortly after that I went straight into becoming a full time assistant for Dr. Hosking. I enjoy working in orthodontics. I became a certified assistant in 1998. I have been a member of the National Association for Dental Assistants for ten years. I continue to take classes and participate in leadership and communication workshops to keep current in the field of assisting.
I enjoy playing in the bell choir at New Life Methodist Church in Lakeview. I also dabble at playing the harmonica. Ask me sometime, I might just play a tune for you if I have it with me.
I enjoy sharing a few jokes and a little laughter with all that I come in contact with. I look forward to helping you achieve the smile you deserve.
Megan Upham, RDH
I was born and raised in the Big Rapids area, in 2012 I graduated from Big Rapids High School knowing that I wanted to become a dental hygienist. I graduated from Ferris State University in 2016 with an associates degree in dental hygiene. I will be continuing my education to earn a bachelors degree. I pursued dental hygiene because I want to help people feel good about their mouth and increase their overall health.
In my free time I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with my family and friends. My parents own a cottage and we enjoy spending weekends boating, swimming, fishing and relaxing. In recent years, I have enjoyed helping my boyfriend on his family farm where he has cattle, horses, pigs and chickens. I am looking forward to my dental hygiene career with Preference Dental and working with patients to achieve oral health.
Christine Winter, Dental Assistant
I have been a dental assistant at Preference Dental since September of 2001. I have had a long history in dentistry that started as a Red Cross Volunteer at a military dental clinic in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. We came back to Michigan in 1992 and I have worked in the dental field ever since.
I was born in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1986 after marrying an Army soldier from Michigan who was stationed in Germany. We spent a few more years with the Army, had two children, and eventually settled in Lakeview, Michigan. My oldest son, Daniel, graduated from Kettering University as a mechanical engineer, found work at Bourns Automobile in Auburn Hills, got married in August 2010 and lives in Lake Orion with his wife Amy. My youngest son, Pascal, is in the Army Reserves and attends Grand Valley University pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Information.
My husband and I love Michigan and all the outdoor activities it has to offer. We are avid runners, wake and snow skiers, hikers, bikers, and enjoy traveling.
I have always enjoyed working in the dental field. It is fun and exciting and allows me to be around people. There is nothing more satisfying than giving someone a beautiful smile!
Alaina Woodard, Dental Assistant
I have lived in the Big Rapids/ Reed City area my entire life, living on Muskegon River. I graduated in 2014 from Reed City High School. I then furthered my education by starting my career at Central Michigan University, then transferring a year later to Ferris State University, where I am currently enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program.
I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, as well as my dog Sadie. In my free time I enjoy exploring the outdoors. I enjoy the outdoors by hunting, kayaking, reading, swimming, riding my snowmobile and a RZR.
I also spend majority of my time, working on the farm with my boyfriend. We recently had thirty new born calves this spring, which are such a joy to be around. During the summer months, we are busy cutting hay and preparing for the winter.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you with all your dental needs. I will strive to make your visit both comfortable and enjoyable.
